TJF Atemi Nationals Champions (10 November 2013). The Jitsu Foundation has 2 National competitions each year, the atemi nationals in November and the randori nationals in February. At the 2013 Atemi Nationals, Archway Ju Jitsu Club were the joint champions, sharing the club shield with the Unversity of Bath and Liverpool John Moores University. With over 50 clubs competing, this was a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to James Young for winning the light blue belt Gold medal, and to Garry Price for winning the orange belt Gold medal. Well done also to Lee Wills and Conor Griffin for reaching the green belt and orange belt finals.

Change to Session Times - Following recent consultations regarding the viability of the sunday session, the consensus was to move the sunday afternoon session to monday evening as that is the most convenient time for the most people. And so, beginning on Monday 4th November, training session times will be as follows:
• Monday Evenings 7-9pm in the dance studio
• Wednesday Evenings 7-9pm in the gymnasium

Archway moving venue - from Sunday 24th March, the club will be moving to a bigger dojo just up the road in Tufnell Park. The new venue is:
   Acland Burghley Sports Centre,
   Burghley Road,
   London,
   NW5 1UJ
 
Training times will change as well. New training times are as follows:
   Sundays 2-4pm
   Wednesdays 7-9pm.

Randori Nationals Results - The 2013 TJF Randori Nationals was last weekend in Walsall, and a large team travelled to represent Archway Jitsu Club. the team did incredibly well, winning a number of medals, as follows. This medal tally secured a 4th place finish for Archway in the medal table, another commendable performance.

New Chief Instructor - After 8 years running Archway jujitsu club, Mat Phillips has handed on the job of chief instructor to Rosie Smith, due to increasing family commitments. His last session in charge was on Sunday 9th September, but he will still be an occasional instructor at Archway and will be found at other London jitsu events.

Jitsuka of the Year - Congratulations to Kim Koskinnen, who is the Archway jitsu club jitsuka of the year for 2012, and was presented with the jitsuka of the year trophy at the 8th anniversary session last weekend. This award recognises Kim's outstanding commitment to the club and enthusiasm for jitsu. Well done Kim!

Increase in Session Fees - From 1st July 2012, session fees will be increasing from £4 to £5 per session for adults, and from £2 to £3 per session for juniors. Session cards also increase in cost from £36 to £45 for adults and from £18 to £27 for juniors. This is the first ever price increase at the club in the 8 years it has been running, and has unfortunately been made necessary by increasing cost overheads.

Randori Nationals Results - Last weekend the Archway Jitsu club team competed at the 2012 TJF Randori Nationals in Walsall. It was a great weekend, with some excellent training and competitions and an awesome party, and a large number of medals won in competition. The club finished joint second overall alongside Queen Mary with 50 points, both clubs losing out to a rampant UCL team who won the shield with 60 points. This is however a great result for the region, with all three top teams coming from London.

Nationals Results - The 2011 Jitsu Foundation Atemi nationals was held the weekend of 12th & 13th November in Sheffield, with some strong performances from the team from Archway despite injuries and hangovers! Congratulations go to Dernel Polydore for reaching the final in the dark blue category and to Flavia Cigolla for reaching the final in the yellow belt category and narrowly missing out on a medal.

Syllabus Changes - the Jitsu Foundation has published some changes and additions to the grading syllabus, which is now available for a short time only from the Jitsu Foundation website here. Changes include a revision to the dangerous parts kata, some throws have moved to different grades and the syllabus now includes some randori. This new syllabus will be examined from the december 2011 gradings onwards.

Jitsuka of the Year - The Archway jitsu club 'jitsuka of the year' award for 2010-2011 was presented at the annual anniversary session last weekend to Dernel Polydore. Dernel is the first female dark blue belt in the history of the club and has really inspired the junor grades with her jitsu skills and commitment to training, and the award is well deserved!

Randori Nationals Results - Last weekend the club took a large team to compete at the 2011 TJF Randori Nationals in Walsall. It was a great weekend, with some excellent training and competitions and an awesome party, and a large number of medals won in competition. However, the team was ultimately unsuccessful in retaining the club shield won in 2010.

Jitsuka of the Year - Congratulations go to Nick Radford who was awarded the jitsuka of the year award for 2009-2010 at the annual anniversary session last weekend. This caps off a successful year for Nick after succcess in competition and grading to dark blue belt.

National Awards Success - The national Jitsu Foundation awards were presented last month at the annual summer ball in Birmingham. All the second dan black belts and above in the foundation voted for jitsu club of the year and jitsu instructor of the year. There was success for Archway, as the club was voted runner up for club of the year for the second year running. This shows that over the last couple of years, Archway Jitsu Club has been consistently recognised as one of the best clubs in the country.

Archway Jitsu club - TJF Randori Nationals Champions 2010 - On the 6th and 7th of March the Jitsu Foundation held its annual Randori Nationals in Telford, attended by nearly a thousand jitsuka from clubs all over the country. The Archway team secured 13 medals in the competition, for a combined total of 43 points - more than any other club. UCL were Second with a total of 40 Points. Archway were therefore declared the overall champions of the competition and Sensei Mat Philliips received the club shield on behalf of the club. This is an outstanding achievement - Not just the first time that Archway have won this prestigious award, but the first time any non-university club has won it!

Nationals Results - The 2009 Jitsu Foundation Atemi nationals was held last weekend in Telford, and the team from Archway did very well, with more than half the team progressing through to the finals of their respective competitions, some of whom brought back medals. Congratulations go to Dernel Polydore for Silver medal in the purple belt category, Desmond Bali for 4th place in the light blue category, Adrien Toupet for reaching the yellow belt final, Maciej Moczynski for reaching the purple belt final, Marcelo Bayas and Will Kervick for reaching the final of the dark blue belt category, Marcelo securing the BUSA bronze medal in the process.

Jitsuka of the Year - Congratulations to Maciej Moczynski who was awarded the trophy for Jitsuka of the year 2009 at last weekends 5 year anniversary session. This recognises Maciej's outstanding commitment to the club and his achievements this year including medals at nationals and attaining his purple belt in record time.

National Awards Success - The national Jitsu Foundation awards were presented on saturday at the annual summer ball in Manchester. All the second dan black belts and above in the foundation voted for jitsu club of the year and jitsu instructor of the year. There was double success for Archway, as the club was voted runner up for club of the year, and Archway instructor Mat Phillips was voted 3rd place for instructor of the year. This is a fantastic achievement for the club, given that there are 100 jitsu foundation clubs in the country and 200 instructors.

Shodan Grading Results - A big congratulations to sensei Rosie Smith from Archway, who achieved her 1st dan black belt at the annual jitsu foundation dan grading in Manchester on Saturday. Congratulations also go to sensei Seye Bolade from our sister club of Hackney, who also achieved his black belt and was awarded top dan in the grading.

Nationals Results - The Jitsu Foundation Randori nationals competition was held at the weekend at the international centre, Telford. The team from Archway did exceptionally well, winning an impressive haul of medals. Overall, Archway finished in 3rd place with 37 points, narrowly beaten by Kings with 39 points and UCL with 41 points. Congratulations to all on an outstanding performance.

Nationals Results - The 2008 Jitsu Foundation Atemi nationals was held this weekend, and the team from Archway did very well, narrowly missing out on medals in several hotly-contested categories. Congratulations go to Maciej Moczynski for reaching the final of the Yellow belt category, Desmond Bali for reaching the green belt final, Nick Radford for reaching the light blue belt final and Rosie Smith for reaching the final of the brown belt category.

License Fees - Annual license and insurance fees are being increased by the Jitsu Foundation to £25 for adults and £15 for juniors. This is the first increase in fees for 5 years, and will take effect from October 1st.

Session Cards - from this week we are now able to offer the facility to pay for sessions in advance to anyone who wishes to do so. Session cards can be bought for £36 for adults or £18 for under-18s and can be used in lieu of payment for any ten sessions. i.e. buying a session card gets you ten sessions for the price of nine. Cash will still be accepted from anyone who wishes to continue paying for each session individually.

New Jiu-Jitsu books - Dave Walker, 3rd dan and former director of the Jitsu Foundation has written 3 new books on Jiu-Jitsu. These three volumes are based on the TJF syllabus and cover in book one - yellow to green belt, book two - purple to dark blue belt and book 3 - brown and black belt. Nationals Results - The 2007 Jitsu Foundation national atemi competition was held this weekend, and the team from Archway did extremely well. Particular congratulations go to Leon Louis who won the gold medal in the novice category. This is a fantastic achievement considering over 400 jitsuka were entered in this category. Further congratulations go to Natasha Wood and Wan-Yin Tiaw who reached the semi finals of the novice category, to Anthony Walker who reached the final of the orange belt category and Toby Speight who reached the final of the light blue category and achieved the bronze medal in the BUSA competition.

Additional sessions - We are pleased to announce that starting on the 31st August, Archway Jitsu club is moving to three sessions a week, with an additional session every friday from 7pm to 9pm. The new weekly timetable is as follows:

New Instructor - We are pleased to announce that Sensei Rosie Smith will be joining Archway Jitsu club as an instructor on a permanent basis. Rosie has been involved in Archway jitsu club since the very first session 3 years ago and is now taking on a teaching role at the club. Rosie will be taking on responsibility for all the juniors and will be looking to grow the club in that direction.

London Jitsu celebration - This year is the twentieth anniversary of the first Jitsu Foundation club in London. To celebrate, the region is holding a special regional course on the 2nd December, followed by a black-tie ball in the evening. All london Jitsuka and instructors, past and present, are invited to come along and take part in this momentous occasion. The course will be held 10:30am-3:30pm at the London Nautical school, Waterloo. The ball is 7pm-3:30am at the new Connaught rooms, Covent Garden. Cost for the ball and course is £49 (£42 concessions).

Charity Wristbands - In memory of Shihan Brian Graham who passed away this year, The Jitsu Foundation has commissioned charity wristbands in red and white - The colours of the Shihan's belt. These wristbands cost £2 each with all proceeds going to support three charities that the Shihan and his family have links with: Cancer research UK, Leeds General Infirmary ICU and the Junior Jitsu Foundation. These wristbands will be available to buy at forthcoming events including the Nationals.

Some tragic news - It is with great sadness that we report that Shihan Brian Graham passed away yesterday following complications that set in after an operation. Shihan Graham was the head of our Jiu-Jitsu style and was responsible for bringing it to this country. He was an excellent teacher and outstanding martial artist who was highly respected by all his students. He will be sorely missed.

Competition Results - This weekend saw the 2005 Jitsu Foundation national Judo competition in Birmingham. There was a good peformance from all Archway competitors and congratulations go to Richard Salmon, who secured bronze medal in the novice heavyweight category.

Syllabus Review - The Jitsu Foundation have introduced some minor changes to the syllabus as part of their ongoing syllabus review. Changes include more ground-fighting, more Japanese terms and some adjustment of which techniques apply at which grade. The new syllabus can be obtained from the Jitsu Foundation Website.

Nationals results - Congratulations to Koko for an incredible performance at last weekend's national atemi competition in Birmingham, where he won the silver medal in the orange belt category. This is a fantastic achievement. The london region as a whole did exceptionally well in securing nearly a dozen medals including gold, silver and bronze in the open competition.

Future Developments - From January it is looking increasingly likely that the monday night session at Archway will be moving to wednesdays 8pm-10pm instead. This is subject to confirmation in the near future. There is also the possibility that a second weekly session will be confirmed for Sundays 6pm-8pm. Watch out for more announcements nearer the time.

Grading results - Congratulations to everyone who went for the grading at the weekend - The standard was extremely high and most candidates passed this grading. London now has a number of new blue belts including one dark blue belt - Emily Butler.

Feedback from the Pre-Grading - The feedback from Sensei Nicola Price from last Saturday's pre-grading was mostly positive, although there are some areas of the technical syllabus that could do with some work.

Archway Jiu-Jitsu club to open it's doors - The inaugural session of Archway Jiu-Jitsu club will be held on 6th September from 8pm to 10pm. All grades and novices welcome for this first session.
